About Dr. Reyna
During my training, I would often hear older doctors say something like, “Medicine is not just a checklist, it’s an art form.”
It’s called The Art of Medicine, and it includes looking at the whole patient holistically—even beyond what they tell you with their words. It’s the impact of being in the room with them, the way you might approach a conversation, and the way you engage with them.
It’s not something I learned from a textbook! Understanding and mastering the Art of Medicine is something I honed as I spent thousands of hours listening to the stories of patients who needed help.
The focus on the patient’s story led me to specialize in Psychiatry. The field in which I felt there was an intersection of Science and Art. While I do focus on diagnostic criteria and evidence-based treatments for psychiatric disorders, the Art of Psychiatry and Medicine brings in another important aspect of clinical care: the ability to connect with patients, empathize with their experiences, and tailor a treatment approach that is unique to their clinical and emotional needs.
As a psychiatrist, I place an emphasis on promoting a healthy and successful therapeutic relationship that promotes growth in my patients. Patients and their families are not just another number, and appointments are not focused on only running through a checklist of symptoms. By taking a more personalized approach and more time with patients, the Art of Medicine can be practiced at its fullest potential.
